There’s something special about photographing families in the in-between years—especially when preteen boys are involved. The Palmer Family’s mini session at Boaz Park in Fort Worth was the perfect example of how a little guidance (and a lot of movement) creates photos that feel natural, connected, and full of life.
With three preteen boys, our goal was simple: keep things moving and keep it fun. Instead of asking the boys to stand still and smile, we built the session around interaction—walking together, sitting close, laughing at inside jokes, and letting personalities shine. This approach keeps energy high and helps boys relax into the experience without feeling overly posed or awkward.
The Palmers chose an earthy, neutral color palette that complemented the natural textures of Boaz Park beautifully. Soft greens, warm tones, and casual layers gave the session a timeless feel while still reflecting who they are right now. Mom and Dad leaned into the moment, letting their boys be themselves, which always results in the most meaningful images.
Lightly Tip: Keeping Boys Engaged
Movement is key. Walking, leaning, sitting close, or giving boys something simple to do keeps hands busy and minds relaxed. The result? Genuine expressions and photos that feel effortless.
This Fort Worth family mini session was photographed by CJ, and it’s a reminder that even a short session can create images that feel deeply personal—especially when everyone feels guided and at ease.
