Getting Natural and Authentic Moments During Your Engagement Session

Marielle & Travis Engagement

So many times my couples tell me they are nervous about taking their engagement photos because they think they are “awkward” or “not good” at taking photos. I’m here to tell you that most of the time that is not actually the case! The truth is they have never really had their photos taken before or have never been guided through what to do in front of the camera. I start every session telling my couples that yes, the poses I put you in will initially feel unnatural because guess what, they are not always a natural position. BUT I also tell them just to make sure they act like themselves. When I put you in a pose, that does not mean I want you stuck there and to feel stiff and serious staring at the camera. In fact, I only want you to look at the camera when I tell you to. Most of the time you’ll be looking at and interacting with your partner. I give you permission to move around and improvise within whatever position you’re in. If you and your fiancé like to be silly and goofy, then do something to make the other one laugh! If you are super romantic then give each other sweet kisses on the cheek or the forehead. The more you are yourselves, the more natural you’ll feel and the more comfortable you’ll become in front of the camera. The more comfortable you are in front of the camera, the more you’ll love your photos! This is probably my number one piece of advice for engagement photos. By the end of your session you should be able to say “that was actually really fun!” and you’ll won’t shy away from the camera on your wedding day.
